Local SEO in 2026: How to Get Found When Customers Search Near You

Most local businesses are invisible online — not because they don't deserve to rank, but because the basics haven't been done.

When someone in your town searches for what you offer, do they find you? For most local businesses in the UK, the answer is no — not reliably. And it's rarely because the competition is better. It's because the basics haven't been done.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important piece of your local presence. It's what appears in Google Maps and in the local results at the top of the page. A fully optimised profile includes: your correct business name, address and phone number; your proper business category; a detailed description using your main keywords; photos updated regularly; your opening hours kept current; regular Google Posts; and responses to all reviews.

Your website needs local signals

Google uses your website to verify your Business Profile. Your site needs to clearly signal where you are and what you do: your full address on your contact page; LocalBusiness schema markup; content that mentions your location naturally; and if you serve multiple areas, dedicated pages for each.

Reviews matter more than most people realise

Google weighs review quantity, recency, and quality when ranking local businesses. A business with 50 fresh reviews will almost always outrank a better business with 5 old ones. The most effective way to get reviews is simple: ask. After every good job, send a direct link to your Google review page.

Citations and directories

A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number. Getting listed accurately on Yell, Thomson Local, Checkatrade, and relevant industry directories helps Google verify your business is real. The key word is accurately — inconsistent data across the web can hurt your rankings.
